April Miscellany

Sunset in the Flint Hills of Kansas, April 14.

Sometimes you don't have a good foreground; you just jump out of the car and shoot.

Dogwood tree in Joplin, MO, on Easter weekend.

Dusk on the square in Fredonia, KS, on April 17.

Our friend Terry and his Tai Chi instructor, Joya, demonstrated along with Joya's class at the Fifth Annual Soroptimist's Women's Show on April 22.

Peaches the Cockatoo entertained people at Burdette's Birdies' booth.

Just some information on the Dusk in Fredonia, Ks., pic. I am the Great Grandson, and Grandson to the founders of Doane's Furniture. Miles Doane, and his son Bliss Doane, they opened Doane's Furniture in 1929, on the east side of the square. Then relocated it on the north side of the square a few years later. I'm not sure of the date. And that is the picuture which you have posted. Several years ago, the building's to the west of Doane's was in a major fire, and was torn down. But the one next to Doanes wall became weak, and unsafe so thry had to tear that one down. And that was when the cool Wrigleys sign was exposed for the 1st time in many years. At one time in the building in back of this one their was a cool old circus wall advertisement on the inside wall. That building was also torn down, and that sign was not worth saving, but it was very cool and old. A lil more info. Miles died in 1967, and Bliss died in 1991, My uncle is now running the family biz. Fredonia is a great town to visit, and live in.

This is an interesting coincidence. Just today I ran across an account of another painted Wriggly ad, this one in Ohio, which came to light when an adjacent building was destroyed: http://www.signmuseum.com/exhibits/exhibits/ohiogum.html
I think the cosmos is telling me I need to rediscover my love of gum.
