Laurel is correct. The "first and last" refers to the First Motel in Texas/Last Motel in Texas sign in Glenrio. When passing west of this into New Mexico down the road pictured, one would leave the Lone Star State behind. Glenrio is a ghost town on a bypassed piece of Route 66 (pictured), save for a few people and at least one dog, which always seems to bark at tourists taking pictures.
